There’s something special about the garage workshop. It's not just a place for tools and cars—it's a space where innovation, creativity, and passion meet. At Sequence, we’re keeping that same spirit alive as we prototype the next generation of flat-pack furniture. We'll soon be moving to a dedicated workshop space so I thought it would be apt to reflect on the time I've spent working from the garage, as well as others who had similar beginnings in their entrepreneuiral journey.
History is filled with stories of small beginnings that led to big ideas. The common thread is that these founders saw potential where others didn’t—The garage represents freedom from distraction, the luxury of focused thought, and the hands-on creation of something real and tangible.
For me (Max, founder of Sequence), that journey began with frustration over the limitations of standard, off-the-shelf furniture. I would find myself dreaming up new ways to customise parts of my build while working on my own home. From those frustrations came the kernel of an idea: what if the future of furniture could be designed by the customer specific to each of their needs?
Flat-pack furniture has revolutionized the way people buy, ship, and assemble their home furnishings. But it’s not without its limitations: mass production can sacrifice quality, while rigid designs don’t always suit individual needs.
This is what I've set out to change. I've been busy in the garage, constantly iterating, testing new ideas, and challenging the traditional rules of furniture making. It’s messy work at times, but every failed prototype is one step closer to success.
We’re working to create pieces that are not only easy to ship and build but are also customizable in ways that mass-market furniture isn’t. Imagine choosing the size, shape, and finish of your furniture to fit your exact needs—and being able to design it all online, thanks to our 3D configurator.
Each prototype that comes out of our workshop represents another step closer in how we think about modular design. Whether it’s adjusting the strength of joints or refining the simplicity of our assembly process, every detail counts. And it all starts here, in the same space where so many other great ideas began—the humble garage!
We’re excited about the future, and we know we’re on the cusp of something big. Just like those who came before us, we’re proving that all you really need to start something great is a vision, a little bit of space, and a whole lot of determination.
Stay tuned, because we’re just getting started.
